Team Jasper: ready to see more of him?

MTV.com has a new interview with Jackson Rathbone [Jasper Hale] where he reveals that we'll be seeing him use his powers in New Moon and that we'll be getting his backstory in Eclipse. . .

"We don't need to have our emotions influenced to know that Jasper Hale Whitlock is one of Stephenie Meyer's greatest creations. A 166-year-old Civil War veteran whose transformation and redemption is a key theme in the later "Twilight" novels, the character has long been a fan favorite. . .

What follows are some major plot revelations from the next two films — including his fight scene with Kellan Lutz, exposing Jasper's powers earlier than you might think and how to kill one of David Slade's newborn vampires. . .

MTV: So we're going to get to Jasper's Civil War backstory?

Rathbone: Yes, I get to shoot some Civil War stuff, and I'm also going to shoot a lot of fighting scenes. Which is great, because I just came off [M. Night Shyamalan's] "The Last Airbender," and I've been doing fighting for the last six months. So I'm ready to keep it on. . .

MTV: What kind of moves will you be pulling off? . . . [and] Why is that?

Rathbone: Well, we're talking about newborn vampires that can't control their urges — they can't really think very quickly. So if you just let them go to their instincts and evade and attack them from side to side, you could get them; but if you try and go after them through force, they're going to win every time. So it's all about evasion. . .

MTV
: Are there training scenes in "Eclipse" along these lines?

Rathbone: It's interesting; there's a lot of cool scenes where Jasper trains the Cullen family on how to fight the newborns. He gets to train Emmett — and Emmett is a born fighter — so he's telling Emmett all these techniques, and Emmett thinks he could just best Jasper [during their sparring]. Jasper ends up getting the best of him, because it's a war mentality, not just a street brawl. It's about thinking ahead; it's a chess game. . .

MTV: Cool. Will we see the scene where Jasper gets bitten?

Rathbone: Oh yeah, we have to see that. It's going to be great. I've been studying up a lot on the Civil War and that era. It really was a crazy time. It was all-out war on our own turf and between countrymen. That's terrible. It's an interesting time to see when Jasper was actually human and what his human form was and, when he gets turned, how intense and how dark he is. Then [we'll see] his realization of what he's become, him finding Alice and being redeemed by love. . .

MTV: And is that the first time we'll see your powers?

Rathbone: Actually, in "New Moon," we get a little glimpse. Inside the school. . .

MTV: How was it to film scenes where you were influencing the emotions of those around you?

Rathbone: It was fun. I just played it very naturally. . .it's a natural thing, like the human ability to smell or to hear is a natural ability. To affect the mental state of anyone around you [I depicted Jasper as] keeping it all right in the eyes. Just thinking it and transferring it through the eyes, which are the windows to the soul — even to the soulless. . .

MTV: And will it be clear to the audience that this emotion-manipulation is going on?

Rathbone: In "New Moon," when we see it? It's pretty obvious. . ."

New Moon: The Soundtrack

Stephenie Meyer's Website has the cover-art and first single information on the New Moon Soundtrack to be released October 20th.

  • Cover-art: shown below.
  • First single: Meet Me on the Equinox by Death Cab for Cutie.

What Death Cab for Cutie has to say about the new single: ""We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest. We wrote 'Meet Me On the Equinox' to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy." — Nick Harmer / Death Cab for Cutie

Introductions: the new guys in Eclipse

MTV.com has an article introducing us to "The New Men Of 'Eclipse'" [by larry carroll]

". . .it's time to bring the beefcake with three soon-to-be fan favorites, each a pivotal character in the "Twilight" saga."

RILEY
played by: Xavier Samuel

more on his character: ". . .Bryce Dallas Howard's Victoria and Xavier Samuel's Riley will enjoy scheming against werewolves and planning to take down the Cullen clan. Fans can look forward to Samuel — a 25-year-old actor in his first major film — serving as the leader of Victoria's newborn army, invading Bella's room and then having a bloody battle with Edward and Seth Clearwater. "

SETH CLEARWATER

played by: BooBoo Stewart

more on his character: ". . .One of Jacob's shape-shifting homeys, Seth is the brother of Leah, and one of the few wolves who consider the vampires to be friends. Although glimpsed in the "New Moon" novel, filmmakers Chris Weitz and David Slade seem to have collectively decided to bump Seth into the third film. . ."

ROYCE KING
played by: Jack Huston

more on his character: ". . .Flashback to early 20th-century New York, where Rosalie Hale was a beautiful teenager with a bright future ahead of her. Falling for Royce King II, Rosalie will suspect that they don't share the same sort of love as other engaged couples — and will eventually be beaten, presumably raped and left to die. These events — as well as her transformation and salvation at the hands of Carlisle — will go a long way toward explaining why Nikki Reed has spent much of the first few films with such a bad case of the Mondays. Oh, and the scene where vampire Rosalie gets revenge on her would-be killers? Just wait until blood-loving "30 Days of Night" director Slade gets his fingerprints all over that one."

Introducing: the new girls in Eclipse. . .

MTV.com is introducing the "New Ladies of 'Eclipse'" to the Twilight Fans:

[by: Larry Carroll]

First up is Maria played by Catalina Sandino Moreno:

". . . Described in Stephenie Meyer's pages as being petite with a soft voice, Maria is the woman who turned Jasper into a bloodthirsty immortal when he was 20 years old in 1863."

Next up is Leah Clearwater played by Julia Jones:

"The only female werewolf in the history of the Quileute tribe. . . We can look forward to seeing her transform in "New Moon" alongside her brother Seth (BooBoo Stewart), and a problematic love triangle leaves her bitter and eager to tease Jacob about his own love triangle."

Next is an old character, but a new actress. . .
Victoria will be played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Eclipse:

"Technically, she isn't a new character — in fact, the vampire Victoria is one of the most pivotal figures in the movie franchise. But in case you've been trapped in a cave for the last few months, sealed off from all mankind, we thought we'd mention that Bryce Dallas Howard replaced Rachelle Lefevre in "Eclipse". . .The Golden Globe nominee certainly has not only the appropriate hair color, but the acting chops to go along with it — and has already begun to bond with her castmates. . ."

Another new face in Eclipse is Emily played by Tinsel Korey:

"Named after Stephenie Meyer's sister, Emily is Leah Clearwater's second cousin and the aunt to Claire — a character who will emerge mainly in "Breaking Dawn.". . . [Korey] is expected to dress down her beauty with prominent scars in "Eclipse." The markings on Emily's face and arm serve as constant reminders of the short temper belonging to Sam Uley (Chaske Spencer), as well as the guilt he feels for harming his fiancĂ©e."

And finally, Bree played by Jodelle Ferland:

". . .the violent newborn vampire Victoria creates in an attempt to avenge the death of James (Cam Gigandet) in the first flick. . . Soon fans can look forward to her shrill voice, special link with Carlisle and eventual fall-out with Jane (Dakota Fanning) and the Volturi."

MTV Interview with Kristen and Taylor

MTV.com has a new interview with 'New Moon' stars Kristen Stewart (Bella) and Taylor Lautner (Jacob).

On Bella's relationship with Jacob, Kristen says,

"And only he can bring her out of that rut. Like, she literally is going to die; she's going to stop eating and be done. And the only thing that brings her out of it is this lightness [Jacob] brings. "

On the parts of New Moon that are tough to pull off, Kristen says,

""New Moon" is riddled with all of that. I think it's the one book in the series that I was intimidated by — in a good way. That's the best feeling to start a movie with. But probably, my favorite line in the book is when I have to say to [Jacob], "It's him; it's always been him!" Like, I have to say that. Yeah, it killed me, it killed me."

"Yeah, and just like everything in our movie, it's such a heightened version of reality. It's like, people don't just break up [in the "Twilight" films] — they break up and it literally kills you. It's not like you just say, "Oh, I'm really depressed and crying." Everything is supposed to be a fantasy version of that. So I always had a really hard time figuring out, "Am I doing enough? Do I look like I'm going to die?""

On his favorite scene to shoot, Taylor says,

"My favorite one was — well, we call it the breakup scene — but it's the scene right after she sees me shirtless and I've cut off my hair, all different for the first time. I have to tell her that we can't be friends anymore."

InStyle: How Designers Envision Bella's Wedding Gown

". . .ever since Eclipse started filming we've been dying for a sneak peek of Bella's wedding dress. In the meantime, we reached out to some of our favorite designers (Christian Siriano's sketch at left) to see how they envision her gown.

. . .Bella's dress is described as an early 1900s design (which complements her antique engagement ring) with friend and Maid of Honor Alice Cullen's modern tweaks to the train and veil. "You look like you just stepped out of an Austen movie," Bella's mother says to the bride-to-be when she spies her in the gown in the final book, Breaking Dawn. "It's gorgeous! So graceful, so elegant." [instyle.com]"

Channing Tatum: G.I. Joe and Sexy Vampire

E! Online reports on the idea of Channing Tatum as Riley:

"Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg isn't the only one who thinks hunky Channing Tatum would have been perfect to play Riley in Eclipse.

The G.I. Joe star's wife, Jenna Dewan, says director David Slade should have let hm sink his teeth into the role.

"I totally tried to get him to do it," Dewan told us earlier this week at the InStyle Summer Soirée at the London Hotel in West Hollywood. "I was like, 'Baby, do Twilight!' Oh, my god. I'm a huge Twilight fan. I've read all the books. So I was like, 'You should do it, you should do it, you should do it!'"

Unfortunately for Jenna, Xavier Samuel snagged the part of the corrupted vampire in the third installment of the Robert Pattinson bloodsucker movie franchise.

While Dewan says Tatum hasn't read any of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books, she's a huge fan...

"I just saw the trailer for [New Moon] today," she said. "It's one of those things where I liked the books so much, I felt like a 10-year-old reading them. I finished them in like three days." . . ." [marc malkin]

Breaking Dawn or The Nocturne?

MTV.com has a new story on the plagiarism that could be Breaking Dawn:

"
If Jordan Scott could ask "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer one thing, it would be, "Why?"

"That would be my question ... the thing I would have to say to her," Scott told MTV News in her first interview since her lawyers filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Meyer on Wednesday over claims that 2008's "Breaking Dawn," the fourth book in the "Twilight" author's series, plagiarizes from Scott's 2006 novel, "The Nocturne."

"I don't think it's a coincidence. This isn't about vampires or vampire lore, it's about the events in the book," she said. "From the main characters getting married and the description of the ceremonies, the feelings the characters are going through, the scene on the beach, the pregnancy and the discussion about it being a boy and giving him a weird name and the husband having to cut the baby out, the wife coughing up blood ... these are not things you typically see in the vampire genre.". . ."
